What's distinctive about the Dartmouth faculty is that they are both leaders in their fields and dedicated teachers. This is a combination that makes them eager to work closely with individual students. All Dartmouth faculty teach undergraduates. It is not unusual to have senior faculty teaching introductory courses or first-year seminars, for example. In 2008, 98 percent of graduating seniors expressed satisfaction with the accessibility of faculty outside the classroom , a higher percentage than our peer institutions.
In 2008-09, Arts and Sciences faculty taught nearly 1,700 courses, advised over 300 senior honors theses, and worked one-on-one with 227 Presidential Scholars. They did this in addition to their regular coursework. Teaching is also major component of the tenure review process.
Today's students want teachers who are actively involved in research. In 2008, 82 percent of students were satisfied with the opportunities for research with faculty.
