There are approximately 6,000 students and 4,000 employees in the Dartmouth community. Of those 10,000 people, about 2,500 of them are employed in the administration.
According to a 2006 analysis by McKinsey & Co., the size of Dartmouth's administration is in line with, or smaller than, administrations at our peer institutions. The analysis showed that the administration had grown by 1 percent annually for the past five years compared to a 3 percent annual growth rate for the faculty of Arts and Sciences. It also showed that growth in the number of positions has taken place either in priority areas, such as the Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience and student life, or in areas that must meet increasingly complex legal mandates for compliance, such as health services, athletics, or support for students with disabilities.
