What do administrators do?
The administration exists to support Dartmouth's academic mission. Administrators do this by making sure the College runs smoothly and working closely with students and faculty. Just a few examples of the kind of support they provide:
- Academic support: Administrators work in the Library, the Hood Museum, the Hopkins Center, with faculty members on their scholarship, and in the Provost's Office.
- Faculty support: Administrators keep academic department offices running smoothly, provide teaching and technology support, work in the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning, in computing, grant support, and in the registrar's office.
- Student support: Administrators staff offices such as student activities, the Tucker Foundation, career services, and health services. They also provide academic support to students, work as class deans, and support our athletic and residential life programs.
- Athletic coaches, trainers, and support staff: All work directly with athletes in Dartmouth's 34 intercollegiate sports as well as clubs and recreational programs. They maintain the trails at the Dartmouth Skiway, groom horses at Morton Farm, blaze trails around the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, and steward the forest in the Second College Grant.
- External Relations: Administrators make sure the Office of Alumni Relations provides services to graduates of the College. In Public Affairs they disseminate information, work with reporters, and publish periodicals. They manage Dartmouth events such as commencement, convocation, and hundreds of lectures, panels, and symposia. Other administrators oversee the admissions process, manage the College's endowment, and safeguard the generosity of alumni by raising funds to support the current educational experience and make sure it's there for future generations of students.
- Operations and Maintenance: They ensure that Dartmouth students are adequately housed, fed, and protected. They also have the responsibility for the maintenance of all college buildings and grounds.
- Finances: Administrators also oversee Dartmouth's annual $600 million budget and manage its $3 billion endowment that funds most of the College's operations.
