Fully half of Dartmouth’s 16 presidents have been graduates of the College.
The first president, Eleazar Wheelock, was the founder of Dartmouth. He was succeeded by his son, John Wheelock, a member of Dartmouth’s first graduating class in 1771. Since then, seven other Dartmouth men have served as president.
The eight alumni presidents of Dartmouth were:
- John Wheelock 1771 (1779-1815)
- Francis Brown 1805 (1815-20)
- Daniel Dana 1788 (1820-21)
- Samuel Colcord Bartlett 1836 (1877-92)
- William Jewett Tucker 1861 (1892-1909)
- Ernest Martin Hopkins 1901 (1916-45)
- John Sloan Dickey ’29 (1945-70)
- David T. McLaughlin ’54 (1981-87)
