Has a Dartmouth alumnus ever been president of the college?

Fully half of Dartmouth’s 16 presidents have been graduates of the College.

The first president, Eleazar Wheelock, was the founder of Dartmouth. He was succeeded by his son, John Wheelock, a member of Dartmouth’s first graduating class in 1771. Since then, seven other Dartmouth men have served as president.

The eight alumni presidents of Dartmouth were:

  • John Wheelock 1771 (1779-1815)
  • Francis Brown 1805 (1815-20)
  • Daniel Dana 1788 (1820-21)
  • Samuel Colcord Bartlett 1836 (1877-92)
  • William Jewett Tucker 1861 (1892-1909)
  • Ernest Martin Hopkins 1901 (1916-45)
  • John Sloan Dickey ’29 (1945-70)
  • David T. McLaughlin ’54 (1981-87)

For more information about Dartmouth’s presidents, see the Wheelock Succession of Dartmouth Presidents.
