What are "legacy" students and what is Dartmouth's policy on admitting them?

Applicants are considered "legacies" if either parent graduated from Dartmouth. Though the College values its long-term relationship with alumni, legacy candidates must still meet Dartmouth's rigorous admissions criteria. President Wright is unequivocal in affirming the value and importance of legacy students at Dartmouth and is proud that during the 2006-07 academic year there were over 40 students at Dartmouth whose mother or father he taught.
