How does Dartmouth’s new financial aid initiative benefit prospective and current students?

Low-income and middle-class families are the primary beneficiaries of Dartmouth’s new initiative. Director of Financial Aid Virginia Hazen says that families with household incomes below $75,000 are guaranteed scholarship assistance at least in the amount of tuition to Dartmouth. There may be additional scholarships and other aid available to cover other expenses, based on demonstrated need. In addition, the elimination of loan expectations means that as much as $17,500 that won’t need to be borrowed over a student’s four-year Dartmouth careers. For current Dartmouth students, existing loan commitments will be cut by half, a significant reduction of up to $2,000 per year.

For families earning more than $75,000 per year, the elimination of loans still applies, as does the reduction in summer earnings expectations.
