What's that green light at the top of Baker Tower?

Every now and then, a green light shines from the tower of Baker Library. Often referred to as the "money light," it is lit for the large alumni events and other major College events to welcome alumni and guests to the campus.

The lights in the tower are quite literally green: according to Director of Facilities Operations & Management John Gratiot, the glow comes from six, two-watt LED lights with green shades that shine on the glass windows in the bell tower. The LEDs replaced six, 150-watt lights that were previously used -- cutting power consumption for the lights by 888 watts.

The official list of events for which the green lights are turned on includes:

  • Convocation
  • Dartmouth Night (homecoming)
  • Fall house parties
  • Winter Carnival weekend
  • First-Year Family weekend
  • Green Key weekend
  • Commencement
  • Reunions
  • Trustee meetings
  • Alumni Club Officers Weekend
  • Alumni Council Weekend
  • Class Officers Weekend
