The Dartmouth Association of Alumni and the Council of Alumni of Dartmouth College (the Alumni Council) are two different organizations, each serving the alumni of the College.
Founded in 1854, the Association is primarily responsible for conducting the annual meeting of the Association and related elections. Its membership includes "every person who has ever matriculated as a full-time student in pursuit of a Dartmouth degree" at the undergraduate College; in an advanced degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; or at Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering, or Tuck School of Business." The Association officers include a president, two vice-presidents and a secretary-treasurer; all are members of an 11-member executive committee. The officers and executive committee have adopted guidelines "to govern the conduct of balloting among the Alumni of Dartmouth College to select a nominee for the position of Alumni Trustee of Dartmouth College." The guidelines specify procedures for the balloting and petitioning process and for convening a balloting committee to oversee balloting contests. Established in 1913, the Alumni Council "sustain[s] a fully informed, representative, and engaged exchange of information and sentiment between alumni and their College, and to enhance and inspire alumni involvement that furthers the mission of the College." Its officers include a president and a president-elect; the Council is made up of nearly 100 representatives of Dartmouth's alumni classes, clubs, and affiliated groups, as well as faculty and undergraduate student members, who meet at least twice annually. Councilors serve on a number of committees that relate to life at the College including committees on Alumni Organizations, College Relations, Nominating and Alumni Search, as well as other standing committees on Academic Affairs, Alumni Awards, Athletics, Communications, Enrollment and Admissions, Honorary Degrees, Students Life, Young Alumni and Young Alumni Awards. An Executive Committee is made up of the president, the president-elect, and the chairs of all standing committees. The Council’s Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee is responsible for identifying the most qualified alumni to serve in leadership roles on the Alumni Council and the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees.
