Dartmouth has a long and distinguished list of alumni who have served in government and public policy.
Two alumni were justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. Salmon P. Chase, Class of 1826, was Chief Justice of the Court from 1864-73; Chase also as governor of, and U.S. Senator from, Ohio, and was Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln. Levi Woodbury, Class of 1809, served on the High Court from 1845-51. He was also the governor of, and U.S. Senator from, New Hampshire, and served as Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson and Martin van Buren, and was Secretary of the Navy under Jackson.
While no Dartmouth graduate has yet been elected President, Nelson Rockefeller, Class of 1930, was the 41st Vice President of the United States, serving under Gerald R. Ford. Rockefeller also served as governor of New York.
Dartmouth alumni in government through the years include more than 160 members of Congress in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives; nearly 20 governors; and a dozen ambassadors and U.S. diplomats. Notables include the current U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson ’68, U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes ’72 (D-NH), former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop ’37 MD, former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert M. Reich ’68, former Prime Minister of Finland Paavo Lipponen ’64, former U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ’58, and former Deputy United Nations Representative H. Carl McCall ’58.
