What's the meaning of the small "a" following the name and class year of some individuals who are associated with Dartmouth?

The letter "a" following a class year indicates that the person is an adopted member of that class. President Emeritus James Wright, for instance, is an adopted member of the Class of 1964, hence you sometimes see him identified as "James Wright '64a." Other letters connected to class year designate the graduate program from which the person holds a degree: “Th” for Thayer School of Engineering, “Tu” for Tuck School of Business “MALS” for Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and “AS” for Graduate Arts and Sciences.
