Where does the name "Dartmouth" come from?

Dartmouth is named for William Legge, the Second Earl of Dartmouth (1731-1801). Legge was one of the College's early benefactors, who helped secure a gift from King George III of £200 and who himself donated £50 for the then-new college. Dartmouth's Hood Museum of Art recently acquired a portrait of Legge, a 1756 oil-on-canvas painting by Italian portraitist Pompeo Batoni.
