Can you explain how honorary degree recipients are selected?

Each fall, Dartmouth's Council on Honorary Degrees–composed of six faculty members, one from each of the Arts and Sciences divisions and one from each professional school–sends a mailing to faculty and graduating students inviting names for consideration for honorary degrees to be awarded at the following spring's Commencement. The senior class president is invited to join the Council's deliberations. The Council members meet with the president, who presents a list of their recommended nominees to the Board of Trustees. The Board ultimately approves a list of names from which the president issues invitations to potential honorary degree recipients.
