Dartmouth has had a presence on Mt. Everest for a number of years. Among the first Dartmouth alumni to reach the peak was Barry Bishop '53, who was part of the first American Everest expedition, in 1963. Also on that expedition, but not reaching the summit, were Jake Breitenbach '57, Barry Corbet '58, Dave Dingman '58 and Barry Prather '61.
Dartmouth's Director of Outdoor Programs, Andy Harvard '71, has led or participated in four Everest expeditions, including the first ascent of the East Face in 1984.
The late adventurer Ned Gillette ’68 not only summitted the mountain in 1992, he participated in the first ski circumnavigation of Everest, the 300-mile Everest Grand Circle Expedition of 1981, which reached an elevation of 23,422 feet.
Most recently, a “Big Green Everest” expedition, led by 1998 graduates Dan Protz and Greg Vadasdi, summitted the world’s highest mountain on June 2, 2005.
