Why is the Dartmouth flag flown at half-staff at certain times when the American flag is not?
Dartmouth’s flag, on the flagpole on the Green, is lowered to half-staff to note the death of a member of the Dartmouth community. At the base of the flagpole, facing North Main Street, is a granite obelisk that holds a commemorative card, noting the name and affiliation of the person for whom the flag is lowered. Of course, standard display protocols are followed regarding the American flag, which is lowered only on the order of the President of the United States. In those instances, the Dartmouth flag is not flown. For more information, see Dartmouth’s policy for lowering the flag.
