What is the “Bema”?

Contrary to popular belief, “Bema” isn’t an acronym, it’s the actual name of a natural ampitheater in College Park, behind Dartmouth Row. The word “bema” is for Greek “step,” and usually refers to a raised platform. Dartmouth’s Bema, built in 1882, was the site of Commencement exercises from 1932-53; undergraduate Class Day exercises are now held there on the day before Commencement.
