In 1999, the Board of Trustees asked the administration to look at various aspects of the out-of-classroom experience and to make recommendations about how it could be enhanced. The Trustees appointed a committee chaired by Trustees Susan Dentzer and Peter Fahey and consisting of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administrators, and alumni/ae. The committee reported back to the Trustees in November 1999 and made a series of recommendations that included improving residential life, adding new programs and social options, strengthening the Coed, Fraternity and Sorority system, and upgrading facilities and infrastructure.
Since that time, Dartmouth has opened 8 new residence halls. In addition, the Dean of the College has increased the professional support available to students in the residence halls, expanded recreational opportunities for students, and worked with the CFS system to strengthen the various houses. We are in the planning phase for two dining halls, including a replacement for Thayer Dining Hall, which will have some additional social space.
