The COS is Dartmouth's internal undergraduate adjudicatory system. Hearing panels are usually comprised of two students, two members of the faculty, and an administrator in addition to the non-voting chair. They hear complaints about a wide range of alleged serious violations of College policy, gather the facts in each case, make a determination of responsibility, and reach conclusions about what the consequences of violations should be.
A separate body, the Organizational Adjudication Committee (OAC,) hears cases that involve organizations such as athletic teams, student clubs, or CFS houses. The hearing panel and process is much the same as with the COS.
Comparable to other college systems, Dartmouth's undergraduate disciplinary system is designed to render a fair outcome, on the basis of the evidence, as quickly as possible.
