Does Dartmouth have an ROTC program?

Yes, Dartmouth undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program. About 10 students participate annually in Dartmouth's ROTC program and an Army officer's commissioning ceremony is held before graduation each year.

The College provides on-campus space, administrative support, and access to physical training facilities. In 2005, Dartmouth President James Wright met with national Army ROTC leaders and urged them to increase scholarships for cadets to cover full tuition and fees. In 2006 the army approved the increase.

Students participate in ROTC under a cross-enrollment agreement between Norwich University and Dartmouth. Dartmouth graduates successfully completing ROTC are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. Participating in ROTC does not incur any obligation to serve in the Army unless a student chooses to commission.

ROTC consists of three to five hours of classroom and hands-on training per week, plus scheduled field training exercises. Physical fitness is an important part of the program, so either participation in an organized sport or physical training with the ROTC Detachment is required. Successful completion of a funded 32-day ROTC leadership assessment course is required for commissioning. Students attend this course during the summer preceding their senior year. ROTC is flexible enough to allow students to participate in leave-term opportunities such as Language Study Abroad and Foreign Study Programs.

ROTC two and three-year scholarships are available to qualified students and are selected on a competitive basis. First-year students can qualify for a three-year scholarship and sophomores for two-year scholarships. These scholarships provide full tuition and $900 a year for books, plus a stipend ranging from $250-$400 per month. Any questions concerning Army ROTC should be directed to the Dartmouth Professor of Military Science at 603-646-3222 or by email to rotc.program@dartmouth.edu.
