1969 was a landmark year for minority enrollment at Dartmouth. The Class of 1973, which arrived in the fall of 1969, included 90 African American students - triple the number who had enrolled the year before, and represented 10 percent of the Class of '73. The increase was the result of an intensified minority recruitment program at the College, including the allocation of $5 million for staff, recruiting, and financial aid. According to a New York Times article from September, 1969, the five-year effort also got a boost when members of Dartmouth's Afro-American Society hit the road in the winter and spring of 1968-69, to help recruit prospective African American students.
Today Dartmouth continues its commitment to a diverse College community. In the fall of 2006, Dartmouth's undergraduate enrollment included 1,229 students of color, making up 30% of the undergraduate student body; 7.4% were African American. In addition, 51% of undergraduates were women. The incoming Class of 2011 includes 381 students of color, making up 33 percent of the class.
