What is gender-neutral housing?

Gender Neutral housing at Dartmouth seeks to provide housing welcoming of all gender identities and expressions. Student requests for gender neutral housing led to the creation of two options beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. Currently the two options available are the Gender Neutral Apartments and Suites and the Gender Neutral Program Floor.

Gender Neutral Suites and Apartments are select room types designated as gender neutral. All students in these room types have their own individual bedrooms. Most share a common living area and bathroom.  Students living in the Gender Neutral Suites and Apartments self-select to live in this type of housing through our returning student room selection process commonly known as Room Draw.

Located on the ground floor of McLane Hall, the Gender Neutral Program Floor is a program that provides a living/learning environment where residents can learn about and explore issues of gender identity and expression in a supportive community. Residents of the Gender Neutral Program Floor host speakers, hold discussions, watch films and share a weekly community dinner. The Gender-Neutral Program Floor has a five-person suite, a three-person suite and four two-room doubles. Students wishing to live on this floor are required to apply for residence.

Approximately 50 students currently live in gender-neutral housing.

More than 90 percent of Dartmouth undergraduates live in College housing, whether it's a residence hall, College-approved co-ed, fraternity or sorority house or undergraduate society. Dartmouth College houses over 3,300 students in its various residential communities.
