Whose idea was 4 o’clock tea at Sanborn Library? What kind of tea is served?

At 4 p.m. each weekday during the academic term, tea is served in Sanborn House, home of Dartmouth’s English department. You can purchase a cup of English breakfast tea with milk or lemon and also buy cookies.

“Serving tea in Sanborn House arose from the custom of Professor Edwin David Sanborn (professor from 1835 to 1885 and to whom the Sanborn House is dedicated) inviting students to his home on Main St. to enjoy his family's hospitality “ says Deborah A. Delmore, the administrative assistant of the English Department.

Though attendance varies, organizers estimate that as many as 1,000 cups of tea are served annually.

Among the tea's chief attractions are the elegance of the library, with its hand-carved butternut wood and semi-private alcoves. The other main attraction is the price: for the last 60 years, a cup of tea at Sanborn has remained an unbeatable 10 cents.
