Where does the Theater Department get all of its costumes?

Costumes for each production at Dartmouth are obtained in a number of ways. The staff in the Costume Shop in the Theater Department work with designers and directors to discuss concepts and produce costumes for the stage. Depending on the creative direction of the performance, Costume Shop staff will build custom-made period costumes to represent a specific time period and location, or will purchase garments at local thrift shops.

Other costumes are bought from standard retail stores, rented from film houses and theatrical specialists, or donated from members of the community. Since Theater is one of the oldest undergraduate activities at Dartmouth, the College has an extensive collection of costumes created and maintained by the department and costumes are often pulled from two very large closets that house this collection.
